Noel Megahey I saw Michelangelo Scandroglio and his band perform as a very complementary support act to Kendrick Scott Oracle at Ronnie Scott's back in February 2020. In The Eyes of the Whale captures the same sense of mood and sophistication in the production and arrangements, with smooth guitar and saxophone solos but it also captures the raw edge and energy that was evident in the live performances. Great band, hope to hear more from them. Favorite track: Disappearing Part II.

about

Italian double bass player Michelangelo Scandroglio’s “In The Eyes of the Whale” is his debut album as a leader. Deeply inspired by new contemporary jazz, the recording features a lineup of international rising stars.
Penned by Scandroglio, all seven originals combine layered melodies, intersecting and merging into each other – thus bringing an ever-changing discourse to the listener.
This solid lineup highlights Alessandro Lanzoni’s beautiful pianism, Bernardo Guerra’s aggressive drumming, American trumpet player Hermon Mehari’s minimal contemplative approach, London-based guitar player Peter Wilson’s rock energy and Michele Tino's virtuosity on alto sax. Among the finest names in world-class contemporary jazz and special guest, Logan Richardson takes the band’s music to a new dimension.
